Antes de começarmos a limpar a prata, devemos saber porque é que ela perde o brilho, fica preta e parece suja ou oxidada. As principais causas da deterioração da prata são:

Todos sabemos as dicas que aparecem sobre como limpar uma corrente de prata ou como limpar jóias de prata, mas... o que dizem é realmente bom para os nossos objectos?

-Não limpar a prata com pasta de dentes, pois a maioria das pastas de dentes têm componentes abrasivos que podem danificar a prata a longo prazo.

-Não limpar a prata com bicarbonato de sódio e vinagre. Um dos \"truques\" que podemos ver cada vez mais nas redes sociais e na Internet. O bicarbonato de sódio e o vinagre geram uma pasta que dará um brilho instantâneo na prata, mas será um brilho que não durará muito, e também produzirá uma oxidação interna que será irreversível. Se o tipo de prata que vai limpar for prata escurecida ou o que chamamos \"prata velha\", perderá o sombreado que a caracteriza. Portanto, já sabemos que à pergunta \"Como limpar a prata com bicarbonato de sódio\" temos de responder com um retumbante não se quisermos manter as propriedades das nossas jóias de prata.

-Não limpe a prata com limão e sal. Quando a prata é esfoliada, pode ser arranhada e podem ser deixadas marcas nela.

E quando tivermos as nossas jóias de prata limpas, como podemos evitar que volte a perder o brilho?

- Quando as jóias estiverem limpas, guarde-as em sacos herméticos separados, evite juntar várias peças de joalharia no mesmo saco, pois podem deteriorar-se.

- Como mencionado acima, não utilizar produtos abrasivos como pasta de dentes ou misturas com bicarbonato, pois podem danificar a prata e em casos como a prata dourada criar directamente um efeito irreversível.

- Evitar aplicar creme ou perfume directamente na joalharia de prata. Contudo, devido ao uso constante destes químicos ou mesmo óleos naturais, recomendamos a limpeza da prata com bastante frequência. E o mais importante é não esperar que a prata esteja muito suja para a limpar.
